Pilates and Confidence

Did you know that with Pilates you can work your abs up to 70% more than with a crunch, and look up to 5 pounds slimmer after a session?

Pilates is a great confidence booster—women love the grace and power they feel after just a single Pilates session.  Almost every exercise requires focus, so you don’t have a chance to get distracted.  One recent study found that Pilates is just as effective at reducing lower-back pain in chronic sufferers as traditional physical therapy strengthening exercises.

To get the results you want, though, you need to do each move using the correct alignment and breathing.  Here are some pointers:

·  Keep your abs engaged.

·  On your exhalation, purse your lips like you’re blowing through a small straw into your belly.

·  Keep your shoulders away from your ears.

·  Stay elongated through your hands and feet.

Runner’s High (and Lows)

Running pumps up the endorphin level, is low cost, and convenient.  Despite its many health benefits, running also has a downside:  it may increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries significantly.

Running places extraordinary demands on an athlete’s body.  Injuries can occur in many places, including the feet, shins, knees and hips.  Illiotibial Band (ITB) syndrome is the most common cause of lateral knee pain in runners, and may occasionally cause lateral hip pain as well.  Both long-distance endurance runners and sprinters are susceptible to hamstring or adductor strains.

There is a solution, though, in the form of Pilates exercises.  By balancing a good cardio workout with a steady Pilates regimen, athletes can counteract current injuries and prevent further ones.

Workout of the Week

Stretch out on a foam roller:

Lie on your side with a full, round foam roller placed under your thigh just below the hip.  You can cross your leg to help maintain balance.  Propel your body up and down the roller along the length of the leg, from just below the hip to just above the knee.  Do twenty repetitions, and then roll over and try it on the other side.

Thank You!

We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who participated in our Thanksgiving Day Fundraiser for Gilda’s Club.  We raised $500 and got so many donated goods that Jodi can barely fit it all in her car!  We are still accepting donations through the end of this week.
